Abstract
Generalized anxiety disorder is characterized by excessive anxiety and worry (apprehensive expectation) occurring
more days than not for at least 6 months, about a number of events or activities (such as work or school
performance).1 The clinical features of Generalized Anxiety Disorder align closely with Chittodvega, a Manovikara
mentioned by Acharya Charaka2. Long term use of conventional anxiolytics have adverse side effects including
psychological dependence impacting the quality of life. This is a case of 17 years old patient complaining of excessive
worry, restlessness, difficulty falling asleep. Based on clinical featured he was diagnosed as a case of generalized
anxiety disorder according to DSM-5 criteria. Ayurvedic intervention framework consisted of Nasya with
Madhuyashti Ghrita, Shiroabhyanga with Chandanbalalakshadi Tailam, Ashwagandha Churna and Drakshadi
Kashyam as oral medicines.
Assessment of the condition of the patient before and after the treatment was done using
Hamilton’s anxiety rating scale to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment. Following the completion of the 21-day
treatment at IPD level, a marked reduction in the score from 21 to 12 on Hamilton’s Anxiety Rating scale and
significant symptomatic relief was observed.

symptoms show resemblance with Chittodvega.
Conventional medical approaches are effective in
acute symptom management, which often fall short
in treating the root cause and long-term prevention
of psychological distress.
The major symptoms of Generalized Anxiety
Disorder, includes excessive thinking, irritability,
palpitations, anxiety, loss of sleep etc. which are
occurs due to Vata Prakop whereas symptoms like
altered habits, fear, anger, etc. are results of Pitta
Prakop. These vitiated Vatadi Doshas impairs Agni
which in turn vitiates Rasadi Dhatus.
Case Report :
A Hindu, 17 years old male patient visited the OPD
of Pandit Khushilal Sharma Ayurvedic College and
Hospital on date 13/02/25 with complaints of
persistent worry, lack of sleep, decreased appetite,
occasional involuntary muscle twitches since, 2
months.
According to classical texts, the mind resides in
Hridaya (heart)[4]. Acharya Charak also stated that
the Twak (skin) and mind are inseparably
connected through Samvayi Sambandh. Therefore,
wherever skin exists, mind is also present. The Vata
Prakop caused by Rasa Kshaya along with
aggravated Pitta affects the Shiras and Hridaya,
Clinical Findings :
Patient complained of continuous overthinking,
restlessness and sudden outburst of anger due to
sociorelational factors particularly associated with
female friends. When overthinking sometimes he
feels palpitations and muscle twitching. He
exhibited significantly impaired sleep quality,
including persistent insomnia, and suffers from
nightmares when manages to sleep. He also gets

Generalized Anxiety Disorder is a condition where
a person constantly worries and feels anxious,
which can lead to various physical symptoms and
mental distress. In Ayurveda, this condition is
referred to as Chittodvega, a type of Manovikara
(mental disorder), caused by an excited state of the
mind. This state is linked to an increase in Rajas
and imbalances in the Vata and Pitta Doshas. Since
both Vata and Pitta are disturbed and the main
symptoms are excessive thinking and fear, the
treatment focusses on calming these Doshas. In
GAD, functions of mind are disturbed. Acharya
Bhela has stated that the brain is the seat of mind.
Nasa is mentioned as gateway of Shira. Hence
Nasya therapy is used. Sneha used for Nasya like
Ghrita is said to be effective in alleviating the Vata
and Pitta Dosha and have Snehan properties. It
